This scene wasn't actual the birth of a hero & wasn't meant to be, this scene presence on screen the birth of hope, a natural born child brought in to a world of genetic grown baby that will bring a bright future weather it was for krypton or earth his destiny is much greater as we all know. This is what this scene was about bring hope in to the universe.
Now i'm sure allot of people were thinking that we would see a superman straight away on screen saving the world but this is the genius of story telling to slowly bring a hero to life.It wouldn't of worked see him become a hero straight away because the story would be missing key points in his life that is important to the story.
Now if you remember that he had two fathers one from krypton & one from earth, jor'el said that he wouldn't be like any one on earth he would be different if will be a god to them, now this is where the conflict come in to play in the story. Clark growing up with this power but knowing what the world is like from earth father telling him that he has to hide his powers because people will fear him for what he came do, really showed on screen after the scene when he saves the school bus that people would fear what he can do.
This is the conflict his has later on as adult dose he show the world who he is or hide what he can do because of people fearing this showed real character in superman & not just a superhero with powers it show intelligence & a heart in a man that is in-conflict with his emotions when he see a world that truly needs him but feels if he reveals himself they might shunt him for what he can do, this is the conflict in the story of superman growing up.
now allot of people were in a uproar about his scene or just couldn't get this scene, unlike the scene from the original were the earth dies of a heart attack, in this version its a tornado which i found good for the scene because it brought a very clear & power message in to the story on superman that the other film's didn't really express that well.
One of the most defining moments in cinema history are when you get a powerful tragic scene in the movie & this scene was one of the greatest.
This scene from man of steel was the defining moment of the film when Clark is faced with saving his father & revealing his identity to other people but his father say no.
It that moment that show why Henry Carvill & Kevin Costner was a brilliant choice to be Casted for these role.
Henry as Clark/superman seriously showed real emotion in this scene having to see someone that moments before he was in conflict with arguing over something stupid having to see his earth father in trouble telling him to let him go & sacrifice himself to hide his identity, with that last smile & a slight nod of the head from Jonathan Kent this was giving him a message that everything was ok & was saying that he was proud to be his father because he raise a good person but not only that it also gave him a message that not everyone can be saved, this was the most important message in the film that just because you have all the powers in the world you cant save everyone that showed brilliantly from kevin Costner on the screen, that is one of the most powerful messages in man of steel.
That one scene seriously does bring you to tears with the music as well really set the tone for an emotional moment that give a true message.
This scene was inportant to be shown in the film to be shown for it give a message of trust.
After zod showing he true hand as he arrived in earths orbit, Clark was conflict at this point to show himself to the world it kind of force his hand by knowing if he dosent zod would destroy the earth hence the reason for the priest scene when he went to the priest for advice. This is where we see the priest asking him how he feels about zod, but it was this point Clark point out that the people of earth not sure can be trusted, this showed a clear message of conflict of being on earth & seeing just how people treat each other, but it was the priest words
"you just have to take a leap of faith" It was this point where the film needed the character of superman to give himself up because it showed one thing Trust.
This is what this scene give across on screen that given himself up to the military shows that the people of earth can trust him & not fear him this was the stepping stone to become the hero he will become & a symbol of hope in the darkness hours.
Now ive seen allot of people saying that superman destroy the city.......really.....this wasn't the case, this was zod's doing not super-mans, superman wasn't responsible for Zod's action.
people were saying why destroy the city & why was superman saving all the people that lost their lives in the city?
well one simple reason from what his earth father message was about even if you have powers you cant save everyone, plus in any battle sometime scarfice is for the greater good in this case the only way superman could save these people was to stop zod completely. if he had stop fighting zod at the time thousand more would have died this is the hash reality of being a hero that some will die no matter how powerful you are.
The city is collateral damage because it war no build will be standing with that much power being thrown at it from a machine like that, this show realism in the film in a real world & not a fantasy one.
Which some people probable didn't like because they are use to cartoons where the builds stay up when being hit by something powerful but in a real world nothing would be standing despite the human causality superman was one person & cant be every at once this is what showed perfectly on screen as it show's realism in a real battle against evil.
Zod's Death
Now this is the one scene that most people were in a up roar saying superman dosent kill because its a code of his.
Well this is where this film got away with it, why look at the title of the film Man of steel. Its the character of superman that dosent kill not the man of steel,i'l explain why.
At the begin of the film as i said when he is born that wasn't the birth of a hero that was the birth of hope, this ending when Clark kill zod this is the birth of a super hero, this is when the man of steel truly becomes superman, Killing zod was the message of scarfice, The live's of many out weigh the life of one.
Zod forced Clark hand in killing him because zod was hell bent of destroy the earth & the people on it, he wouldn't of stop hence the reason why he had no choice but to kill zod, goes against everything he was tough about life hence the reason why he fell to his knee shout in pain that he had to kill.
it was at this point that defines superman as a character & why he vowed never to kill, but everyone saying that he would never kill this is wrong because superman vow to never kill appealed to human life, he would take an alien life if it was threatening the earth safely but he would never go out of his way to kill on purpose unless it absolutely necessary to, so this superman never kills is so wrong.
Hence the reason why he had no choice but to kill zod because there was no other option's because keeping him alive would have been a bad choice.
These are the reason why i find man of steel 100% perfect on story showing that superman is more than just a man with powers. he has a heart which is a strength of character & a symbol of hope.
